In 2024 Shirley Lions organised and co-ordinated their fifth gardening competition for schools in Shirley. The aim of the competition is to support gardening projects in our schools. With more and more gardens disappearing from Britain's streets, hopefully we can also inspire today's school children to take up gardening outside of their school and understand the eco and sustainability benefits of gardening.
The entrants in the different categories for 2024 were :-
Infants School category
Burman Infants School
Blossomfield Infants School
Monkspath Infants School
Year 4 and above category
Dickens Heath Community Primary School
Monkspath Junior School
St Patrick's Primary Academy
The gardens were judged by Jackie Barker from Notcutts Garden Centre who once again sponsored the competition and provided the winner's prizes. At this year's Shirley Carnival our Youth Committee Chair, Lion Jackie Culliford announced the winners of each category and presented the winners with a £100 Garden Voucher. All the entrants were presented with a certificate and a "Shirley Lion"
